The Basics

What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is a conversational AI tool made by OpenAI. Think of it as a very smart text assistant that you can talk to by typing messages. You ask it questions, give it instructions, and it responds in plain English (or dozens of other languages).

It works like a text message conversation. You type something, ChatGPT responds. You can ask follow-up questions, change direction, or start a brand new topic at any time.

Step by Step

Setting up your account

Getting started takes less than five minutes. Here is exactly what to do.

Go to chat.openai.com

Open your web browser and visit chat.openai.com. This works on any computer, tablet, or phone. There is also a free mobile app for iPhone and Android.

Create a free account

Click "Sign Up" and use your email address, Google account, or Apple ID. The free plan gives you access to the core features, which is everything you need to get started.

Start typing

You will see a text box at the bottom of the screen. Just type your question or request in plain, everyday language. Press Enter or click the send button. That is it.

Try These

Your first conversations

Not sure what to say? Here are some easy things to try right away. Copy and paste any of these into ChatGPT to see how it works.

Ask a question

Try: "Explain how a refrigerator works in simple terms." ChatGPT will break down complicated topics into language anyone can understand.

Get help writing

Try: "Help me write a polite email to my landlord about a maintenance issue with the kitchen sink." It will draft something you can review and customize.

Brainstorm ideas

Try: "Give me 10 creative birthday party ideas for a 7-year-old who loves dinosaurs." ChatGPT is great at generating lists of ideas quickly.

Learn something new

Try: "Teach me the basics of photography. I am a complete beginner." It can act as a patient tutor who adjusts to your level.

Pro Tips

Tips for better results

  • Be specific Instead of "write me something," try "write a 200-word thank-you note to my neighbor for watching my dog." The more detail you give, the better the result.
  • Ask for revisions If the first response is not quite right, say "make it shorter," "make the tone more casual," or "add more detail about the budget." ChatGPT remembers the conversation.
  • Give it a role Try "You are a friendly cooking teacher. Explain how to make pasta from scratch." Assigning a role helps ChatGPT tailor its tone and detail level.
  • Use follow-up questions Each conversation builds on what came before. Ask "can you explain that differently?" or "what about for someone on a tight budget?" to refine the response.

Stay Smart

What to watch out for

ChatGPT is incredibly useful, but it is not perfect. Keep these things in mind as you get started.

It can be confidently wrong

ChatGPT sometimes generates information that sounds correct but is actually inaccurate. This is called a "hallucination." Always double-check important facts, especially dates, statistics, and medical or legal information.

It does not browse the internet in real time

The free version of ChatGPT has a knowledge cutoff date. It may not know about very recent events. If you need up-to-the-minute information, verify with a quick web search.

Do not share private information

Avoid typing passwords, Social Security numbers, financial details, or other sensitive personal information into ChatGPT. Treat it like a public conversation.

It does not remember between conversations

Each new conversation starts fresh. ChatGPT will not remember what you talked about last week unless you tell it again. Within a single conversation, though, it remembers everything.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is ChatGPT free?
Yes. The free plan gives you access to the core model. There is a paid "Plus" plan with faster responses and extra features, but the free version is perfectly good for getting started.
Do I need to install anything?
No. ChatGPT works in your web browser. There is also an optional mobile app for iPhone and Android if you prefer using your phone.
Can ChatGPT see my files or screen?
No. ChatGPT only sees the text (and any images or files) you directly send to it. It cannot access your computer, emails, or anything else on its own.
What is the difference between ChatGPT and Google?
Google searches the web and shows you links to existing pages. ChatGPT generates a custom response to your specific question. Google is better for finding specific websites; ChatGPT is better for explanations, writing, and brainstorming.
Are there alternatives to ChatGPT?
Yes. Claude (by Anthropic), Gemini (by Google), and Copilot (by Microsoft) are popular alternatives. They all work similarly. The skills you learn here apply to all of them.
Can I use ChatGPT for work or school?
Many people do, but check your workplace or school policies first. Some organizations have specific guidelines about using AI tools. Always be transparent about when AI helped you.
